During the Vietnam War, American Red Cross volunteers were usually college-degreed women who spent a one year tour in country as morale boosters for American troops. They ran recreation centers, visited hospitals, and, because of the mobility of the UH-1 Iroquois helicopter (better known as the 'Huey') travelled to the front-line landing zones and base camps to bring games and smiles to soldiers. In doing so they encountered the tragedy and hardship of conflict, memories of which stayed with them for the rest of their lives. They too, like those serving in the forces, had to return home to a country which was terribly unsupportive of their efforts, as a result many of their experiences were left 'unheard'. \n<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
